John Calvin Truby - part 2

1900 - 1913

By June 1, 1900, John and Henrietta Truby are living outside the Village of Gibsonburg in Madison Township, Sandusky County, Ohio.  John (49) and Henrietta (39) are renting their home.  They have been married for 19 years.  Henrietta has given birth to 9 children, but only 6 are still living.  John is working as a laborer in the oil industry.  Emmet (18) worked as a day laborer and had been out of work for 8 months.  Hazel (12) attended school for 8 months.  Eula (11) was a day laborer who had been out of work for 8 months while  Fern (8) attended school for 8 months.  Lyman (5) and Mabel (2) rounded out the family.

Gilbert K was the only child who died before 1900 that I was able to find.  He was born in 1897 and died in 1898.  I have found no documentation of Gilbert's birth or death, or that of the other two children, but again there was no mandatory reporting of these events at this time in history.

As it happened, I was walking around West Union Cemetery in Gibsonburg one day looking for the grave of Ethel's mother.  I walked past the grave shown below, read the marker, and kept walking.  It wasn't until several graves later that it hit me who J C & H Truby were.  I had no idea that any of their family was buried in Gibsonburg.  I have to assume that the other two children died in Pennsylvania before they came to Ohio.

In a future post you will see the obituary of John's mother from April, 1900 stating that John lives in Butler, Pennsylvania.  While it is true that one of his sister's lived in Butler, it appears that John was actually living in Gibsonburg at the time as evidenced by the June 1, 1900 census and the burial of his son in 1898.  I'm at a loss to explain why they would have shown him to be in Butler.  Perhaps he was staying with his sister during his mother's final illness to help take care of her.

The 1905 Rural Delivery Directory shows that John is working as an oil pumper and the family is living 2-1/2 miles from Gibsonburg in Madison Twp on RFD Route 1.  All six children are in the home.

On Apr 15, 1910. John, 58 years old, and Henrietta, 49 years old, are living on Stone Street in Gibsonburg OH.  They own their home which is mortgaged.  John and Henrietta have been married for 28 years and Henrietta still shows that she had given birth to 9 children with only 6 of them still living.  John had been working as a laborer in the lime plant although he reports that he was not currently working and had been out of work for 12 weeks during 1909.  Henrietta is a self-employed laundress.  She is able to read and write, however, John cannot read although he is able to write.

Hazel O was 21 years old and was not able to read or write.  Lyman I (15) and Mabel I (11) attended school.

According to John's obituary, the family moved to Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio in 1913 and he then worked at the Tiffin Wagon Company.
